Here in the Pacific Northwest, we get our fair share of rainy weather, which means wet roads and limited visibility. However, a little rain has never stopped any Washingtonian from getting out into nature and enjoying its beauty! If you love taking your travel trailer out for a camping trip even on a rainy day, you’ll just need to ensure that you’re towing your trailer safely on those wet roads.

Keep Your Trailer Balanced

Make sure that you load up your trailer carefully and keep the weight balanced on either side of your travel trailer. You don’t want to overburden one side or the other and put too much pressure on the tires. You can always check the weight of your trailer at a highway weigh station if you’re not sure whether you’ve put too much weight on it.

Slow Down & Turn On Your Lights

When towing a travel trailer, you should always stay a few miles below the speed limit to begin with, even on a nice day, because you’re going to require more space to bring your towing setup to a safe stop. On a rainy day, you’ll want to slow your speed down to at least ten miles below the posted limits and turn on your headlights so you can see and be seen.

Check Before You Go

Before you depart your home or your campground for the highway, walk around your towing setup and make sure that:

  • All of your tires are aired up properly and in good condition with plenty of tread
  • Your slide-outs, doors, and windows are shut and locked
  • The hitch and towing chains connecting your trailer and towing vehicle are completely secure
